He was discovered with painful stab wounds and tied to a lamppost in Bilston days before Christmas.

A kind and compassionate member of the public alerted the RSPCA after discovering Comet in The Lunt on December 10. They wrapped the dog in blankets and fed him while they waited for help.

Comet underwent urgent treatment at the RSPCA Birmingham Animal Hospital and an appeal for information about the incident was released.

Now the Mastiff breed is searching for a forever home as he is cared for by the Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home in Gloucestershire.

The charity has told how Comet “has shown remarkable resilience”. They say he is under the care of dedicated staff and have released a new picture of the dog following his treatment.

Amy, Animal Operations Manager at the home, said: “Comet’s journey has been one of resilience and hope.

“Despite everything he has been through, he continues to show us so much love and trust.

“When we heard Comet’s story, our hearts went out to him. It was clear this poor dog had endured so much and may never have known what it’s like to be truly loved and cared for.

“Even with the busy Christmas season approaching, we knew CDCH was the best place to give him the chance of a brighter future.

“He deserves a fresh start with a family who will cherish him.”

CDCH added: “Comet is a lovable, larger-than-life character who charms everyone he meets with his personality and affectionate nature.

“Despite his size, he sees himself as a lapdog and loves showering his humans with kisses. Comet will make a fun, loyal, and affectionate companion.”

The RSPCA said they received reports of a slim, white man tying the dog to the lamp post at about 20:00 GMT on 9 December and was hoping to trace him.

The investigation into what happened to Comet is ongoing.
