Man, 20, dies following two-car collision near Tamworth

A 20-year-old man has tragically died following a collision involving two cars in Drayton Bassett, near Tamworth, this morning.

Emergency services teams rushed to the junction of A453 Sutton Road and Drayton Lane, sending three ambulances, two paramedic offices, a MERIT trauma doctor and a critical care paramedic to the scene. 

On arrival, ambulance teams discovered the two cars and a man who was in a "critical" condition receiving CPR. 

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "On arrival, crews found a man in a critical condition receiving CPR.

“Ambulance staff immediately took over to administer advanced life support but sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, he could not be saved and was confirmed dead at the scene.”

The driver of the second car, another man, was treated by medics for injuries not believed to be serious, where he was later conveyed to Good Hope Hospital.

The road was still closed as of 11.39am, with Staffordshire Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit also on the scene. 

The group said on X: "Currently at an incident on the A453 Sutton Road, Drayton Bassett. Road closures in place. Please follow the diversions and allow extra time for your journey."

Staffordshire Police said that the road will remain closed for a number of hours today.

A Staffordshire Police spokesperson said: "We were called at 6.40am today to reports of a collision involving a silver Ford Fiesta and a white BMW coupe on Sutton Road in Mile Oak.

"Sadly, the driver of the Ford, a 20-year-old man, was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. The driver of the BMW, a 27-year-old man, was taken to hospital by ambulance as a precaution.

"Highways have been informed and the A453 Sutton Road is due to be closed for a number of hours at the junctions of Slade Road, Bassets Pole and Drayton Lane."

Staffordshire Police is asking anyone with information to get in touch with the force using 101, quoting incident number 73 of January 8.
