Arrests made as part of rail operation at Stafford railway station

A day of police action at Stafford railway station led to a number of arrests, including a man being charged for drug and weapon possession.

The day of action by officers from Staffordshire Police and British Transport Police took place throughout Monday at the station through ticket enforcement and safeguarding patrols.

Lee Webb was stopped and searched by officers from the new county proactive and rural crime team, who found drugs, cash and a starter pistol on the 34-year-old, with a further search of addresses in Stafford and Birmingham uncovering cash and weapons.

Webb, of Wash Lane in Birmingham, was arrested and charged with possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of class A (cocaine), and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon in a private place.

He was due to appear at Newcastle Under Lyme Magistrates Court on Tuesday. No details are yet available about Webb's appearance.

Other arrests made during the operation included two 42-year-old men from Stafford and London, who were arrested under the proceeds of crime act and on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of a class B drug, with both being released under investigation.

The third arrest saw a 17-year-old boy from Stafford arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a controlled class A drug (cocaine) and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and who was released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: "A man has been charged and three people arrested after we joined forces with officers from the British Transport Police (BTP) County Lines Taskforce for an operation at Stafford Railway Station yesterday.

"Lee Webb, 34, from Wash Lane, Birmingham, has been charged with possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of class A (cocaine), and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon in a private place.

"It comes after officers from our new county proactive and rural crime team took part in ticket enforcement and safeguarding patrols at the station and found drugs, cash and a starter pistol.

"They also found a large amount of cash and weapons when they later searched addresses in the town and Birmingham.

"Webb is due to appear at the North Staffordshire Justice Centre today (Tuesday 7 January).

"Three other people were arrested during the operation. They were a 42-year-old man, from the Stafford area, under the proceeds of crime act, and a 42-year-old man, from London, on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of a class B drug. Both have been released under investigation.

"A 17-year-old boy, from the Stafford area, was also arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a controlled class A drug (cocaine) and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. He has been released on conditional bail while enquiries continue."
