More than 30 firefighters from stations as far apart as Northfield and Smethwick rushed to Ideal Works, Hayes Lane, Cradley at around 6pm last night where they battled the fire affecting two outbuildings as well as vehicles.

Nearby residents reported booming sounds and what sounded like gunshots at the site, on the border of Lye and Cradley.

One resident said: ""I heard some pops, it sounded like fireworks to start off with but then I could see the fire outside of the window.

"The fire service got here quite quick, but you could see the smoke going a fair bit away."

The fire was brought under control at around 9pm, though fire crews remained on site overnight to damp down and make the area safe.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman this morning said: "Although crews are not fully on site now, they will be visiting during the day to monitor the situation."
