Instead, the money raised from scrapping the tax break benefit will go towards state schools.

Abolishing the tax break is expected to result in an extra £1.5bn saved every year by 2029-2030, 'every penny' of which will be funnelled into state schools, promised Reeves.

Speaking to ITV News, the Chancellor said: "I recognise a lot of parents work hard to be able to send their children to private schools but all parents are aspirational for their children, including the 94 per cent of children in our state schools.

"Every single penny of that money will go into our state schools to ensure every child gets the best start in life, and that is so often through being able to recruit and retain the best teachers."
