The 61-year-old was elected as the West Midlands' first mayor in 2017 and served two terms in office before losing out to Labour's Richard Parker in May.
He has been awarded the knighthood for public service in the New Year Honours list, having already been awarded a CBE for services to the national economy in 2015.
He said he had only been "the front man" and the honour was an accolade for the people in the region who made a success of the combined authority and the mayoralty.
