It was reported by West Midlands Trains that all lines were blocked between Birmingham and Wolverhampton after a points failure at Wolverhampton.
Engineers from Network Rail were called in to fix the problem, which was reported around 5.42am and which was a cause of issues in the area throughout the day.
The network on the West Coast Mainline had already been hit by delays on the network after engineering works between Birmingham and Manchester, which caused delays and disruption.
Passengers were also advised to look at road transport services, with tickets for trains valid on National Express and Arriva Bus services.
West Midlands Railway said that the existing issues would be fixed by 6pm and the service back to normal by 6.30pm.
A spokesman for West Midlands Railway said: "Due to a points failure at Wolverhampton all lines are blocked.
"Train services running through this station will be cancelled or delayed.
"Road transport has been provided. You can also use your ticket on the NX Buses between Birmingham and Wolverhampton, West Midlands Metro Birmingham and Wolverhampton and Arriva Buses between Birmingham and Shrewsbury.
"Network Rail are continuously working hard to resolve the issue.
"The line is now back to normal between Shrewsbury and Birmingham, but services between Wolverhampton and Birmingham, Stafford and Birmingham are still suspended.
"We expect the problem to be fixed by 6pm and we estimate that our train service will be back to normal by 6.30pm."
