The collision happened around 6pm on the northbound carriageway at Junction 8 south of Walsall, near the slipways with the M5.
The collision and subsequent recovery by National Highways left long queues on the M6 northbound, with the queues seen stretching back as far as Junction 7 for Great Barr.
The southbound carriageway was also congested back to Junction 10 for Wolverhampton and Walsall due to "onlookers".
Traffic officers at the scene worked to move the vehicles to a safer location and were able to clear and reopen the road to normal conditions at around 8pm.
A spokeswoman for National Highways said: "We were called to a three-vehicle collision at Junction 8 of the M5 at around 6pm.
"Officers at the scene were able to move the vehicles into an emergency area and were able to fully reopen the motorway quite quickly.
"Normal traffic conditions were expected between 7.45pm and 8pm and there are currently delays of 15 minutes against expected traffic."
