Boy, 17, dies after car crashes into tree in Handsworth

A teenager has died after the car he was travelling in hit a tree.

The 17-year-old boy was in the car with four other teenagers on Grove Lane in Handsworth when it failed to stop for police just after 2am on Thursday.

The car was then seen hitting a tree, with the 17-year-old treated for injuries, but pronounced dead at the scene.

The other teenagers in the car were all taken to hospital, with one being treated for potentially life-threatening injuries and the other three for injuries not thought to be life-threatening.

The road was closed off while emergency services teams worked to establish the circumstances for the collision, while The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has begun an investigation.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "A teenager has died after a collision in Handsworth in the early hours of this morning (19 December).

"The 17-year-old boy was in a car which failed to stop for police before hitting a tree in Grove Lane just after 2am.

"Sadly nothing could be done to save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Four other teenagers who were also in the car have been taken to hospital.

"One has potentially life-threatening injuries while the other three are not thought to be life-threatening.

"The road has been closed while emergency services and collision experts establish the exact circumstances of the collision.

"The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has begun an investigation as is normal procedure.
