Andrew Whitmore built fires in his own first floor flat and in the laundry of the three-storey block in Sandy Hollow, Compton, on September 7, 2023.

Three fire engines and 16 firefighters tackled the blazes which began at 5.15am and fortunately every resident was evacuated safely.

Miss Sophie Murray, prosecuting, said: "The significant damage caused by the floor meant the flats were uninhabitable afterwards. The damage meant there was need for an extensive refurbishment.

"It is difficult to put a value on the damage but the most important part of this case is the danger the other residents were placed in because of this fire."
