Dangerous driver locked up after paralysing a Black Country grandfather in high speed crash in a 30mph zone

A dangerous driver has been jailed after paralysing a Black Country grandfather when he ploughed into his car speeding more than 40mph over the limit.

Joseph Shilton, 22, was speeding down Halesowen Road, Netherton, on May 28, 2023, when he crashed into Alan Homer's red Peugeot as he was pulling out on the narrow road.

Wolverhampton Crown Court was shown footage of the crash which led to devastating injuries of Mr Homer, and showed Shilton and his passenger stagger away from their Ford Fiesta.

Homer sustained devastating injuries and was in a coma for two weeks before spending months in various hospitals. He will never walk again, has severe brain damage and will require care for the rest of his life.

His family were in the public gallery for the sentencing.

A victim impact statement from him was read out in court: "Every day I say to myself I wish I had died in that accident. I cannot walk, I do not have control of my bladder and other bodily functions.
