Human rights observed and explored in Wolverhampton

The University of Wolverhampton held an event for Human Rights Day in which the topic was addressed from all angles.

 Survivors, advocates and freedom fighters dropped into the event, which featured a variety of speakers including Birmingham poet Lisa Connolly. whose book 'Built from Broken' has been riding high in the Amazon charts in recent weeks.

 A series of poems based partly on her lived experience as someone who has been through an abusive relationship. 

She is also a member of the 1 in 3 group, the title of which refers to  the statistic of women affected by domestic violence. 

She said: "The Human Rights Day was a truly incredible event.

 "It was an honour to listen to people from all walks of life who came together to discuss the vital topic of human rights.

 "I shared a new poem I wrote in honour of 1in3—my heartfelt way of saying thank you for all they’ve done, not just for the cause but for me personally as well as ten poems from Built from Broken

"The strength and passion in the room was beyond inspiring and I didn’t want to leave. 

"The response to the book and the poems I read from it was great - I have had so much positive feedback about Built From Broken and it has featured in the top ten of the charts in recent weeks. 

"More important than than sales,  the poems represent lived experience and many of the people who have heard them or read the book can relate to them."
