Two people were sent to hospital as 13 were treated by paramedics as a Christmas fairground ride collapsed in Birmingham’s Centenary Square.

Paramedics were called to the scene at 7.29pm last night (Thursday, December 12) as the 180ft high Star Flyer ride fell to ground level.

The fairground is run by Ice Skate Birmingham is one of the main Christmas attractions in Birmingham city centre, alongside the German Market.

Centary Square is part of Westside BID which issued a statement to the media last night after speaking with Ice Skate Birmingham.

Brian Hughes, chairman of Westside BID,: “Our first thoughts are with those who have been injured.

“While we are relieved to have heard that no-one has received life-threatening injuries, this must have been a terrible incident to experience.

“We have already spoken with the owners of Ice Skate Birmingham, which operates the ride, and we know that they will now be working closely with the authorities to find out exactly what went wrong.”
