With a yellow 'severe' weather warning in place for the majority of the UK, the weekend is set to see tougher travel for both drivers and public transport users.

In the run-up to the stormy weekend, we have compiled a list of advice from public transport and road groups about travelling safely in adverse weather.

While many transport groups expect there to be no impact on regular journeys, contingency plans have been put into place and advice issued to ensure safe travel.

For those travelling by bus in the West Midlands, National Express West Midlands advised to stay up to date via their website and social media channels for delays and cancellations and to plan well ahead of travelling.

The group said: "Our local bus services are running as normal however there may be some delays or diversions as a result of difficult road conditions.

"We are closely monitoring the weather conditions and our teams are working hard to help everyone travel safely to their destination. Customers are advised to plan ahead and check our website www.nxbus.co.uk and official social media channels for the latest service updates."

Trains are also expected to be affected by the adverse weather, with fallen trees and flooded lines proving to be a real threat to regular travel routes.

For those travelling by train, West Midlands Railway also said to stay up to date by utilising their website, with live information on stoppages or delays being updated throughout the day.

A West Midlands Railway spokesperson said: "All of our services are scheduled to run as normal this weekend, but if there is disruption due to Storm Darragh, live information will be made available in journey planners.

"We encourage passengers to check before travelling to ensure they have the latest information."

Birmingham Airport
Birmingham Airport said to check flight time updates before travelling to the airport

Birmingham Airport has said that they expect no disruption regarding Storm Darragh, however, those travelling should be wary of road conditions when getting to and from their flights.

A spokesperson said that passengers should "check with airlines" for the latest advice on travel and flight times, and "in the eventuality of delays and cancellations" passengers should check their carrier's website before travelling to the airport.

The group also said that passengers are "not encouraged" to arrive with more time at the airport than what is currently recommended, but "should be mindful" that getting to the airport may take longer due to road and rail conditions.
