Coffee morning at Wolverhampton Mosque helps to raise vital funds for Cancer research

An annual coffee morning working to help raise much-needed funds for cancer research was judged to be a resounding success.

The fifth annual Secret Angels Macmillan Coffee Morning, hosted in partnership with Jamia Masjid Bilal, raised £6057.70 for Macmillan Cancer Support while bringing together diverse communities to support cancer awareness and care. 

The event on November 25 also showcased the mosque as an inclusive and welcoming space for people from all backgrounds.

With representatives from Macmillan Cancer Support and the Black Country Healthcare NHS Trust in attendance, the event served as a platform for discussions on cancer awareness, early detection, and support services. 

The Coffee Morning saw guests from across the community attend, including Wolverhampton West MP Warinder Juss, former MP Rob Marris, and local councillors Wendy Dalton, Muhammad Nasim, Obaida Ahmed, Qaiser Azeem, and Iqra Tahir. 

The VIP guest was Deputy Lieutenant Martin Levermore MBE, who represented the Lord-Lieutenant of the West Midlands Derrick Anderson CBE.

Alvina Ali from Secret Angels CIC said :“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for our fifth Macmillan Coffee Morning. 

This event is about more than just raising funds, as it’s about raising awareness and fostering inclusivity. 

"Seeing the mosque bring together people from all walks of life, supporting a vital cause, fills us with pride and hope. 

"A heartfelt thank you to our Secret Angels Ambassadors, local businesses, volunteers, and everyone who attended. 

"Together, we’ve made a difference.”

Mr Levermore said: "Secret Angels has united marginalised communities in Wolverhampton toraise awareness around cancer-related issues. 

"Their initiatives focus not only on education but also on the practical collaboration efforts to empower communities to be better informed.  

"The Macmillan coffee morning typifies that selfless type of kindness we can all engage with to foster understanding and compassion across our communities". 

The funds raised will go directly to supporting cancer patients and their families in Wolverhampton, furthering the vital work Macmillan Cancer Support does across the UK.
