Cash-strapped Birmingham City Council has put forward proposals to introduce car parking fees at the award-winning park in which is a popular attraction for residents and visitors from further afield. The move has also attracted mixed feelings among park visitors.
If the proposals for the Park Road beauty spot go ahead then parking will cost £2.20 for two hours, £3 for four hours, £5 for all-day parking or £104 for a season ticket.
Upset park user Richard Grimmett has set up a petition stating: "Sutton Park is a vital resource. As a regular visitor, I can attest to the park's immense impact on our lives. It serves as a sanctuary and a source of physical and mental vitality for its users.
"The proposal to introduce parking charges threatens the accessibility of Sutton Park for many. A study by the Natural England states that increased access to green spaces can help tackle health issues such as obesity and mental distress. Yet, the addition of parking charges may potentially discourage many from such vital natural interaction.
"It's crucial that we uphold free access as a fundamental right for all park visitors. Therefore, we implore local officials to reconsider the implementation of this charge. Stand with us today, sign this petition and help us keep Sutton Park accessible to all, irrespective of their income."
So far more than 640 supporters have added their names to the petition which has an initial goal of 1,000 names.
