For Flop, life started out as normal after hatching in April, but she has had quite the journey since then in her time at Dudley Zoo and Castle.

The Humboldt penguin has gone through developing a limp, becoming ill, being unable to support her own weight, losing her appetite and numerous rehabilitation efforts by the bird team at the zoo to give her her quality of life back.

It has been a long struggle, but today, Flop is a healthy, happy and very energetic little penguin, swimming, playing and eating with the other baby penguins in the juvenile isolation area at the top of the zoo.

Head of Birds Nicola Wright spoke about Flop's journey from illness to where she was now.

She said: "She started off life just fine, but we've been hand rearing her for a little while and she developed a bit of a limp and then, within 24 hours, she was completely off her feet and couldn't move at all.

"We took her to the vet and did X-Rays and got bloods and what was identified was that she was fighting an infection, so we started her off on antibiotics and, from then on, it's been trials and tribulations of trying to get her to use her feet again."
