Whilst the Real Madrid player was scoring last minute goals for England in Germany he discovered his grandparents home had been visited by the media.
This led him to boycotting press conferences which in turn led him to being branded being too big for his boots.
The 21-year-old said: "I think I lost my smile a lot after the Euros when it came to playing for England. I felt I was a little mistreated in comparison to what I contributed.
"I felt some of it was a little bit harsh on me. I think I felt like the scapegoat. Maybe I was feeling a bit sorry for myself."
"In the end it felt like the whole world was crumbling down on me after the Euros."
"One of the big criticisms was that I did not speak to the media. I did not want to do any press conferences. It was reported in a way that I think I was above it."
"It was not that at all, I had some personal things going on where journalists had gone to see members of my family whilst I was at the tournament."
He added: "They went to see my grandparents and it is something I kept to myself. And I don't think that is fair. I think it crosses the line of respect.
"I think that's where I took it a bit personally and I decided just to focus on the football and let that do the talking instead of talking to the press and to people who do not seemingly respect me.
"That was a big thing for me, I think my family comes first. My nan did not leave her house all summer, bless her. Maybe I should have communicated that before so people understood my situation but that was a little bit personal to me."
However, the Real Madrid player claimed all is rosy now.
He said: "My smile is now back."
