Storm Bert: West Bromwich Christmas lights switch-on cancelled due to safety reasons
The impending Storm Bert has claimed another Christmas lights switch-on which has now been cancelled due to "safety reasons".
The storm is set to hit the region tomorrow (Saturday) and West Bromwich Business Improvement District (BID) announced the event has been cancelled.
The BID posted on social media: "We regret to inform you all that our much-anticipated Christmas light switch-on for 2024 has been cancelled due to weather conditions predicted for tomorrow.
"Storm Bert is against us unfortunately and the safety of staff and public come first. As you can imagine everyone at the BID are very disappointed and all the hard work that has been put into making this a successful event each year.
"We can only apologise but it's completely out of our control."
Performers were due to provide the entertainment with band Damage flicking the all-important switch this evening.
Unlike the Tettenhall Christmas Lights event which Storm Bert also prevented going ahead, the West Bromwich event will not be postponed but cancelled altogether.
The BID spokesman added: "We will not be re-scheduling Christmas light switch-on 2024. Rest assured we have two more Christmas Events coming up in December: Friday, December 6, 5pm - 7pm, Events area in Carter's Green by the clock and New Square Shopping Centre on Saturday, December 21, 11am - 4pm."
