'Only a matter of time before a tragic incident occurs': Calls to tackle speeding on Wolverhampton road after cars allegedly hit wall

Conservative councillors Paul Singh and Stephanie Haynes have urged Wolverhampton Council to take action on Mount Road in Penn following the collision earlier this month.

Councillor Singh, who has served on the Penn ward since 2007, claims two cars hit the wall to a home between the evening of November 10 and morning of November 11.

Mr Singh said the road has "long been a concern" for residents, adding he fears it is just a matter of time "before a more tragic incident occurs".

He added: "...This latest accident is a stark reminder of the dangers that speeding poses to the people who live here.

"I am calling on the Wolverhampton Council to urgently investigate the speed limits on Mount Road, assess the safety risks, and engage with residents to explore potential solutions, including the possibility of introducing speed restrictions."

Councillor Haynes added that action must be taken to ensure Mount Road "is a safe place" for residents.

She said: "I urge the council to take swift action and work closely with the community to identify effective measures that will help reduce the risk of future incidents." 

Wolverhampton Council however said the speeds vehicles travel on the road are on average below the 30mph speed limit.

A statement read: "We constantly monitor where road safety measures may need to be implemented across the transport network in Wolverhampton.

"Any works are financed from the Transportation Capital Works Programme and we have to prioritise spend where data tells us the need for traffic measures is greatest.

“The latest review of Mount Road shows there have been no road traffic collisions resulting in personal injury there in the last three years and speeds are on average below the 30mph speed limit. 

"We take all concerns seriously and will continue to monitor the situation to consider if further interventions are needed in the future.”

West Midlands Police confirmed officers were called to a two-car crash on Mount Road at about 11.40pm on November 10.

A force spokesman said: "One of the drivers and a passenger were assessed by paramedics for injuries which are not believed to be serious, before being taken for further checks at hospital.

"We have spoken with both drivers and anyone with information can contact us via Live Chat quoting log 4239 of November 10.

"We understand people's concerns around careless and dangerous driving around the West Midlands, and our new Roads Policing Unit is dedicated to reducing the numbers of people killed and seriously injured on our roads.

"We would also encourage people to submit dash or helmet cam footage of careless or dangerous driving to submit footage to us by searching 'WMP Op Snap'."
