Allow me a serious, rather po-faced moment. The best possible tribute to the millions of sacrifices that delivered 80 years of peace would be for our ruling classes to work like hell for another 80 years of the same, or better. Moving swiftly on . . .

A particularly bright VE-Day idea, proposed by one Bruno Peek, a veteran “pageant master” (no, me neither) is for every street in the land to hold a jolly fish-and-chips evening on May 8, including a mass rendition of that great anthem “I Vow to Thee, My Country.” Now, would that be before or after the mushy peas?
