The Crown Centre Tesco Superstore in Stourbridge was evacuated at around 7pm on Wednesday after the alarms began sounding, with the Crown Centre and Town Hall also being evacuated, forcing the cancellation of a show at the Town Hall.
Crews from West Midlands Fire Service attended the scene and checked the building, with the cause of the alarm found to be a faulty sprinkler system in one of the store rooms.
A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "We were called to the Crown Centre in Stourbridge at 7pm on Wednesday evening.
"When we arrived, we found the issue to be a faulty sprinkler system."
A spokesman for Tesco said: " Our Stourbridge Extra store is open and trading as normal today after having to close early last night due to a fire alert.
"We apologise for the inconvenience.”
Councillor Phil Atkins, cabinet member responsible for halls, said: “The fire service asked us to evacuate people form an event at Stourbridge Town Hall yesterday evening, due to a fire related issue on the car park located within the Crown Centre.
“We safely evacuated all staff and ticket holders but would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to people attending.
“As it was a theatre company organised event, we advise customers who purchased tickets to contact the place where they purchased from. Tonight’s show will be taking place as scheduled.”
