The Exeter-based national forecaster says the prospect of snow is notoriously hard to predict and it has issued a deep dive explanation on YouTube to take a look at the science of the white stuff.

One thing is for sure though: temperatures across the West Midlands are due to plunge as air from the Arctic descends across the country.

The regional outlook says the forecasters expect it will be unsettled on Sunday with heavy rain or showers and stronger winds. Sunday night could see temperatures falling to -5C.

Temperatures of up to 9C below the average for the time of the year are a possibility according to a post issued by the Met Office on X, formerly Twitter.

There will be sunshine and showers on Monday but it will be turning colder, and by Wednesday the highest temperature could be around 6C.

The Met Office UK forecast for Monday to Wednesday and beyond says that frequent wintry showers are expected, mainly in the north and along eastern and western coasts exposed to the strong north-to-northwesterly flow.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Rebekah Hicks explained: “A notable early winter cold spell will arrive across the north from Sunday and will likely reach all parts of the UK by midweek.

“Temperatures will drop as a northerly airflow develops, bringing in colder Arctic air. This introduces the possibility of snow, initially over high ground in the north from Sunday, with gusty winds also a potential hazard.”

She added: “There is a lot of uncertainty in what might happen after Sunday, but there are a number of scenarios which could bring some more widespread rain, along with some hill snow and stronger winds.

"It is possible that there may be some more widespread snowfall across lower ground, but the chance of this for any given region is low at this stage. What we do know is that the whole of the UK is likely to experience a spell of several days of cold, potentially disruptive weather next week.

“Warnings for wintry hazards, including snow and ice, are possible, so it’s important to stay up to date with the latest forecast.”
