Man arrested in Sandwell in connection with several supermarket robberies

A man has been arrested on suspicion of a series of supermarket robberies around the Midlands.

The man was arrested after being stopped on Birmingham Road in West Bromwich on Tuesday night after his car was linked to the robberies.

The 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of five robberies, which are said to have taken place in Birmingham, Sandwell and Leicestershire, as well as a burglary which took place in West Bromwich in October.

It follows on from a 28-year-old man being arrested and charged with five robberies and a burglary in October.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We have arrested a man in connection with a string of armed robberies committed at supermarkets across the West Midlands and Leicestershire.

"Officers on patrol stopped a car linked to the suspect after it was spotted driving on the M5 last night (12 Nov).

"The 24-year-old was arrested on Birmingham Road on suspicion of five robberies and remains in police custody.

"He was also arrested in connection with a burglary that took place last month in West Bromwich.

"The arrest comes after a number of supermarkets were targeted in Birmingham, Sandwell and Leicestershire last month.

"A 28-year-old man was charged with five robberies and a burglary last month.

"We are running Operation Ruby to reduce offences of robbery.

"We are also working hard to spread crime prevention messaging across the region so people can take all reasonable steps possible to help keep themselves and their belongings safe.
