Black Country RAF Veteran gets surprise visit on his special occasion
A veteran RAF man received a surprise visit to the care home in Colley Gate on the occasion of his 100th birthday.
Two squadron leaders from RAF Cosford visited Derrick Morris who was born in Cradley Heath on November 7 1924.
After training as a draughtsman, Derick joined the RAF in 1943 and his first physical education instructor was the famous boxer Jack London before he gained his wings the following year.
He joined 61 Sqn at RAF Skellingthorpe in Lincolnshire, flying as a technician in 30 missions over mainland Europe and Norway in Lancaster Bombers during World War II and would be promoted to sergeant and then warrant officer.
He gained medals including the 1934-1945 Star, the Bomber Command Clasp, The France and Germany Star and the 1939-1945 War medal.
They were proudly on display at the Two Gates Care Home where he was visited by Squadron Leaders Chris Wilson and Dave Kerrison from Cosford as well as many members of his family including his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
