Terry and Don Turner, who moved to Valencia about 10 years ago, were found dead in their car days after severe flash flood struck over a week ago.

In tribute daughters Renee Turner and  Ruth O'Loughlin, from Burntwood, pledged to raise money in aid of Spanish animal rescue project Naturaleza y Animales due to animal lover Terry, aged 74, devoting much of her time since retirement volunteering to look after the homeless dogs.

The sisters are this weekend believed to be heading out to the region where their parents lived near the small town of Pedralba, a 45-minute drive north-west of Valencia.

The sisters said: “It’s not like a trip that we used to make to see mum and dad to have dinner and watch films with them.

“We’re going over there because they’re not with us anymore and it’s going to be very heart-breaking for us.”

Miss Turner added: “It’s dread I think, that’s the only way I can put it.”

“We know mum and dad would have wanted to come home. The difficult thing will be looking through all their things, their bank details, pensions, everything like that – stuff we don’t want to do.

"We just pray to God that they didn’t suffer because it would break our hearts more than they’re already broken,” Ms O’Loughlin said.

They expect to visit British Consulate staff in Spain before being taken to a police station, where they would formally identify their father. Their mother has been identified by her fingerprints.

Meanwhile the online memorial appeal has raised more than  £1,800 with the help of more than 90 supporters.

The couple are thought to be the only Brits known to have died in the devastated floods.

Friends reported them missing on October 31 after calling round to check on them at the isolated property and only finding their pets at home.

Torrential rain in Spain has so far claimed the lives of at least 219 people with 93 more reported missing.
