"Don't follow the crowd" is a heartfelt story of resilience, hope, and transformation by Anthony Ogborne which was inspired by his eldest daughter’s journey from isolation to self-discovery.
The story’s character “Ella” is based on his daughter Chloe, who faced relentless bullying throughout her school years, eventually being withdrawn for home schooling.
He said that while she was lonely, she was determined and joined The Way Youth Zone in Wolverhampton.
Through the Youth Zone’s huge variety of youth-led activities, including music room, climbing wall, sports hall, gym, art room and dance studio, the support of dedicated youth workers, and the friendships she forged, the 16-year-old began to rediscover her confidence and sense of self.
Chloe now stands as a part of her own rock band, Dying Addiction, where she leads on guitar, adds vocals, and writes the band’s original songs, and her father Anthony said he felt her story was one which needed to be told.
He said: “I’m just a normal working-class bloke and I never imagined I’d publish a book, but seeing my daughter’s story unfold was incredible. If her journey can help others, then I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.
“Chloe completely turned her life around and it all started with daring to dream and finding a community that empowered her to do just that at The Way. The youth workers are so supportive and encouraged Chloe to get involved.”
Kay Aldridge, Arts Co-ordinator at The Way said: "It's been incredible to watch Chloe grow from a shy newcomer to a confident performer.
"Her dedication to volunteering as a Young Leader in the art room and her support of our junior members in their Arts Award journeys were invaluable. Seeing her shine on stage at her first gig was a proud moment."
