National Highways reported at 3.25pm that the southbound carriageway of the motorway had been shut due to a "multi-vehicle collision" between Junction 6 for Birmingham and the A38, and Junction 5 for Sutton Coldfield.

An image posted by the traffic agency shows five stationary cars in the outside lane, including a 4x4 at right-angles to the carriageway.

Soon after 4pm the agency issued an update, saying: "Traffic has been released and is currently running past the scene in 1 lane. There are currently delays back to J8. Thanks for your patience."

An hour later, at around 5.15pm, the agency said the scene was now clear, but warned: "Long delays of 60 minutes remain but these should start to ease now. Thanks for your patience, have a safe onward journey."

Police and highways officers were at the scene, with a West Midlands Ambulance spokesperson confirming that medics have also been called.
