Wolverhampton Council 'delighted' to help Hugh Porter's charity challenge
Wolverhampton Council chiefs have said they were "honoured" to be a part of cycling legend Hugh Porter's charity challenge.
The Wolverhampton-born Commonwealth Gold winner will take to the track at the city's Aldersley Stadium to mark his 80 for 80 event.
He will cycle at the site, where he trained ahead of his World Championship successes, on January 26 to mark his birthday the following day.
It will see the sporting star and his friends take on 80 laps – roughly 22 miles – for Compton Care, which he is a patron for.
The charity helps support people with complex and incurable diseases.
Councillor Steve Evans, cabinet member for city environment, said: "We’re honoured that Hugh has asked us to support him with his charity challenge to celebrate his 80th birthday.
"He wanted to get the public involved, so two of our WV Active instructors will be teaching a 90 minute outdoor spin class next to the track whilst Hugh and his friends complete the 80 laps.
"It will be a fantastic event and we will do all we can to help Hugh meet his fundraising target."
The cyclist is aiming to raise £1,888 and is asking people to donate as a "birthday gift" to him and the charity.
Mayor of Wolverhampton Councillor Claire Darke will drop the flag to start the event at 11am on the day.
