Popular cycling challenge in aid of Compton Care returns for 2020
Hundreds of cyclists will take to the region's roads as a popular cycling charity event returns for the fifth year.
The Banks's Round the Wrekin Cycle Sportive will take place on Sunday, May 17, in aid of Wolverhampton-based charity Compton Care.
Wolverhampton-born cycling legend Hugh Porter will be saddling up to join fundraisers for the popular event, which sets off from Dudley Kingswinford Rugby Club.
The event has been running for the last four years and offers cyclists the opportunity to join one of four routes – the Hugh Porter Challenge 27 miles, Compton Care Classic 55 miles, the Banks's Epic 100 miles and Family Funcycle six miles. New for this year, organisers have changed the routes, with participants riding through Worfield, Claverley and the Malvern and Clee Hills.
Event organiser, Dawn Smith, said: "Our Banks’s Round the Wrekin Cycle Sportive is now a staple event on the cycling calendar and one that we look forward to hosting every year.
“For 2020 we decided to change the routes to refresh the event and give our cyclists a new challenge to take part in.
“Every year the event sees cyclists come from all over the country to take part and this year we are hoping for a great turnout once again.
"We are so grateful to all those cyclists who join us at this event for their extraordinary fundraising efforts. Because of them we are able to continue to provide care and support for local people living with complex and incurable conditions.”
Four-time world pursuit champion Hugh, 79, will be riding the short 27-mile route – which takes cyclists through Worfield and Claverley. The Compton Care Class route rides through Kinver down to Bewdley, heading towards the Clee Hills.
While the Banks's Epic includes a big climb over the Malvern Hills. The Funcycle ride is a six-mile family-friendly route along the Staffordshire Canal and Railway walk.
