The festival of Janmashtami is celebrated all over the world by Hindus, owing to the fact that Sri Krishna was one of the most powerful human incarnations of Lord Vishnu, who gave the vital message of the Bhagwat Gita – the guiding principles for every Hindu.

There will be celebrations taking place at Hindu temples across the region to mark this event, celebrated on the Ashtami – eighth day – of Krishna Paksha, or dark fortnight, in the month of Shravana, or Bhadra.

In Wolverhampton, the Sri Krishna Mandir on Penn Road will mark the anniversary with an evening celebration at the temple on Friday, starting at 7pm, with the deity of Krishna decorated with flowers and garlands.

The statue of Lord Krishna will be placed in a cradle in the temple and decorated with ornaments, flowers, and beautiful clothes. Following the birth ceremony of Lord Krishna, the Prasad, a material substance of vegetarian food that is a religious offering in Hinduism will be distributed and celebrations will go on until midnight.

In West Bromwich, the Sri Krishna Mandir on Old Meeting Street will see a range of celebrations during the evening on Friday, starting at 7pm with the Daily Aarti – lighting of flames – opening the celebrations, followed by the Daily Aarti worship and the Bhajan Satsang singing, before the Samuh Aarti closes the event.

At the Shri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple in Tividale on Friday, worshippers will be invited to join a unique ceremony called Ghatachedanam, otherwise known as a pot breaking ceremony. Here, a pot containing yoghurt or another dairy-based item will placed in a difficult to reach place and teams of young men will form pyramids to attempt to reach and break the pot.
