It was fun in the sun as Tettenhall Pool finally reopened after being closed for repair work.

Families from across the Black Country flocked to take a dip and splash about in the water.

It comes after the pool closed for essential work on September 11 last year, with the water treatment and pumping systems needing a revamp.

Aimee Mander, from Stourbridge, visited the pool with two-year-old Reuben and six-year-old Tilly.

She said: "I heard the pool was back open and we've not been for a while and we hoped for sunshine.

"It's nice for the children.

"And there's nowhere to use like this so it's quite nice.

"I think Reuben enjoyed it in the shallower end, making the most of it.

"I'd forgotten how large the pool was, so it's so nice to visit again.

"Tilly is a bit shy – she doesn't like the attention, but she will go into the water later.

"I used to come when she was a toddler and Reuben has never been before."

The 40-year-old added: "It's good because you can watch both children and they can play together and I can sit on the site with their auntie.

"It's nice to enjoy because it's a lovely local area.

"We visited just to come to the pool and the village, because it's different to come here.

"It's unique to visit and it's free activity for the children as well."

The pool was at risk of closing for good after the council said it would either repair it or create an outdoor gym.

The repair work came after a public consultation attracted a total of 3,796 responses – with 95.4 per cent voting to repair the site, rather than have an outdoor gym replace it.

Ross Cook, director of city environment, said the pool was "exactly what he wanted".

He added: "It's lovely. It was always the plan to open it for the summer – that's what we committed to.

"It's here from August to people enjoy a long warm summer.

"It's here for the community and we wanted them to come out and enjoy it now.

"We've been maintaining it for a number of years, knowing we needed to invest, and now the time was right to put that in – so it stays as a facility for many years to come."

As part of the work a new filtration system has been put in, around 100 metres of new pipework had to be laid and the pumphouse extended.

Councillor Jasbir Jaspal, cabinet member for health and wellbeing at Wolverhampton Council, got into the water with the children.

She said: "This is all about encouraging outdoor activity and using our green spaces and it's all good for health.

"It looked cold, but it actually was quite nice – the initial dip was cold, but it warmed up – I didn't want to get out after that.

"We wanted everyone using it to have fun.

"This is what we want families to do.

"It's for everyone's use and it's a family activity that young and old can use.

"I hear we get people not local but from farther afield as well."

There were previously only two filtration tanks but a third has now been added and all three should last for the next 30 years.

Kerry White and Emma Carney, both from Willenhall, visited the pool with Debbie Williams and their family.

Kerry said: "We came here years ago and we were telling the children about it – it's a great place for the kids to come and have some fun.

"It's so lovely to come and sit and relax and let the kids play."

'Icon'

Eleanor Smith, MP for Wolverhampton South West, decided to join the fun and took a dip in the pool.

The politician said: "The council said they would do it and they have.

"There was concerns about it being closed, but it needed to be fixed.

"This is an icon of Wolverhampton and people from all over Shropshire and Telford visit.

"My granddaughter will come as well – we came about two years ago and she fell in love with it.

"Kids love water and I think it's wonderful Wolverhampton has this facility for everyone to use.

"We used to have calls nearly every week and we would call the council and they promised us it would open.

"Well done to the council for actually doing it on time.

"There were concerns around it but we had faith."

And Louis Johnson was one of the first people to jump into the pool.

The 13-year-old said: "It's a little bit cold, but not too cold.

"We don't live far from here so it's always good to use the pool.

"I'm happy to see it back open and in use."

His mother, Theresa Johnson, said: "He has been waiting weeks for it to open.

"He is really happy to support the local village, so they support Louis and we support them too."
