Traffic woes continue as 10-week gas mains project starts in Wolverhampton
Tailbacks and long delays have hit motorists travelling into the city as 10 weeks of roadworks take over a main route into Wolverhampton.
Gas main works have now started in Lower Horseley Fields, which has been reduced to single-file traffic.
Drivers are being warned to expect long delays as traffic woes are set to continue when children return to school next week.
A spokeswoman for Barnsley-based Manterfield Drilling LTD, which is carrying out the work, said: "It is a big project that is going to take 10 to 12 weeks.
"It is going to be a long duration but we are going to do it bit-by-bit."
The roadworks started on Tuesday, with a team set to work 24 hours a day to reinforce a gas man in the street.
The project, which will also run seven days a week, is expected to last continue until the end of July.
A set of two-way temporary traffic lights is now forcing single-file traffic between Corser Street and Shakespeare Street as part of the first phase of works.
They will remain throughout the works, with the lane restrictions in place to enable work to be carried out safely.
The second phase of the work, expected to start early July, will see Corser Street temporarily closed for about three weeks.
Both Lower Horseley Fields and Willenhall Road will remain open as the work progresses throughout the summer, but with restrictions.
A Wolverhampton Council spokesman said: "We will keep you up to date with the progress and reopening of the roads as the scheme comes to an end.
"Thank you for your patience while these vital improvement works are carried out."
Lower Horsleey Fields and Willenhall Road are two of the busiest streets for commuters coming into Wolverhampton from Walsall, Willenhall and Birmingham during the rush hour.
Drivers are warned they could experience delays while the project is carried out – and have been urged to adjust their journeys.
