West Midlands braced for sleet and snow showers bringing travel disruption

Snow and sleet arrived in the Black Country and Staffordshire today - with a severe weather warnings in place.

Could snow fall in Wolverhampton this week?

Warnings for snow and ice were issued by the Met Office covering all of the West Midlands from midday today until 11am on Wednesday.

But forecasters have warned people to expect heavier snow to arrive on Thursday and Friday.

Sleet was expected from around 3pm today lasting until the early evening as temperatures drop to 1C (34F).

Up to 10cm of snow could fall on higher ground as temperatures drop across large parts of the UK.

Weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued by the Met Office as flurries were reported in Glasgow overnight.

Around 0.4in to 1.2in (1cm-3cm) could accumulate on lower-lying levels, with the possibility of 2in to 4in (5cm-10cm) falling on higher ground, Marco Petagna from the Met Office said.

Four separate yellow weather warnings have been issued which cover most of the UK.

During Tuesday morning, a band of rain will push from west to east which could fall as rain, sleet or snow, particularly at peaks in Wales and northern England and Scotland .

As the day progresses the wintry weather will move across the Midlands and into the south east.

Snow showers could return on Wednesday and there is a risk of further disruptive snow and ice to parts of the country towards the end of the week.

How are our councils preparing for the snow?

Gritting crews have been hitting the streets of the Black Country today ahead of the expected snow fall.

Sandwell Council were out on the borough's streets last night, while Wolverhampton and Walsall councils have been out on the streets this morning.

The crews are keeping an eye on the weather around the clock to prepare the region's roads for icy conditions.
