The monument earmarked for Shell Corner in Halesowen will replace a previous one which went missing decades ago.

The neighbourhood earned its name from the original shell which stood there from 1924, before it disappeared in the 1970s due to road layout changes.

The new shell will also act as a point of remembrance for armed serviceman.

Halesowen North ward councillor Stuart Henley, who has led the project, said brickwork for a plinth started on Monday and the monument is set to be lowered into place by March 21.

Halesowen College students painted artwork onto the side of the shell which features silhouettes of soldiers and poppies.

The new shell was donated to councillor Henley by a squadron in Essex.
