Duncan Edwards remembered by Manchester United fans at Dudley church service
Footballing legend Duncan Edwards was honoured at his childhood church during a service attended by around 100 people.
His family were joined by dozens of Manchester United fans, former Wolves player Mel Eves and dignitaries of Dudley who all packed into St Francis Church in Laurel Road, Dudley.
The service yesterday morning was held to mark the 60th anniversary of the fatal Munich air crash, which claimed the life of Duncan and seven of his Manchester United team-mates.
A tribute speech was given by Rose Cook Monk, who has launched the Duncan Edwards Foundation in his memory.
Hymns and prays were led by the church vicar reverend Joanna Anderson.
Mrs Cook said: “Today we remember the life of our town’s most famous son.
“It is with respect we remember him and his colleagues who died so tragically in Munich 60 years ago.”
Former England international Duncan survived the crash on February 6, 1958, but died 15 days later in hospital due to his severe injuries, aged 21.
The Manchester United fans presented the Foundation with a £1,000 cheque for charity.
They attended with a large flag with the words ‘Flowers of Manchester’ and then went on a Duncan Edwards trail after the service, visiting his statue in Dudley town centre and his grave at Dudley Cemetery.
