Dudley Council is proposing to build a transit site in the Straits in Gornal there, but 93 per cent of residents surveyed by Dudley North MP Ian Austin opposed the move.

The Straits site, which is in a residential area, is one of 10 sites which Dudley Council is looking at to establish a transit camp.

Such a site will make it easier for the police and council to move on travellers quicker from illegal camps.

Mr Austin said: “It’s a good idea to make it easier to move travellers off parks and public open spaces, and I stood up in Parliament to demand councils and the police are given more powers and resources to tackle illegal camps, but I do not think that heavily residential areas such as the sites in my constituency at the Straits or Blowers Green are suitable.

“Residents on the Straits are overwhelmingly against this proposal and I want the Council to take in to consideration how they feel.
