The journalist and author will take on the role of guest curator for the October festivities.
Wolverhampton-born Sathnam, whose memoir The Boy With The Topknot was adapted for television, said he was looking forward to curating 'unique' events this year.
He said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be curating the BLF next year. My home county has produced some of the best writers in Britain, from Jonathan Coe to David Lodge, Meera Syal and a certain bloke called William Shakespeare.
"Yet, too often it undersells itself. I hope we can help put it back on the cultural map."
The 10-day Birmingham Literature Festival, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, will return from October 4.
A short spring edition of the festival is set to take place from April 27 to 29.
