Revealed: Find out which Walsall food firms have the lowest hygiene ratings
Seven firms in Walsall were temporarily shut down and four were prosecuted over food standards breaches, while another caused a salmonella outbreak by selling dodgy kebabs in 2017, it has been revealed.
Walsall Council visited nearly 1,000 premises last year and dished out six zero ratings demanding ‘urgent’ improvement and more than 70 level one ratings requiring ‘major’ improvement, according to the Food Standards Agency.
Dozens more, including a school club, were given a two rating falling below ‘satisfactory’ standards.
The findings come as an Environmental Health report for the last 12 months was published by the council.
It reveals that nine people fell ill from salmonella after eating kebab meat and salad from a takeaway. Legal action is pending.
Seven businesses were served with Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notices ordering them to close due to serious rat, or mice infestations, the report reveals.
They were Willenhall Supermarket on Walsall Road, Bangla Store on Milton Street, Shake & Grill on Stafford Street, High Street Cafe in Walsall Wood, F B Supermarket on Milton Street, Chicken.com on Stafford Street and Pizza Cottage on Caldmore Road.
All but Willenhall Supermarket, which has now closed down, have reopened.
The council took four businesses to court over hygiene failings – East End Tandoori in Hawes Close, was fined £2,400 and hit with £1,600 costs and a £40 victim surcharge, while Beijing House on Bloxwich Road was fined £400 and told to pay £1,500 costs and a £40 surcharge.
Bucaresti in Caldmore Green, faced a £1,800 fine, £2,497.50 costs and a £180 surcharge, and Pool Street Chippy was given a £480 fine, £1,837 costs and a £48 surcharge.
Blakenall One Call Peri Peri Chicken on Blakenall Lane, New Oriental Garden on Beeches Road, Aunt Sally’s on Bridge Street, Surti News, Broadway West, The Taste of Home on Moat Road, and Willenhall Supermarket all received zero ratings.

In total, including businesses rated before 2017, 86 per cent were rated satisfactory or better – three to five.
Councillor Ian Shire, communities and leisure chief for Walsall Council, said that the authority was very active on cracking down on hygiene.
He said: "We take the safety of our residents very seriously and are a comparatively tough, as well as diligent, authority when it comes to enforcement and numbers of premises inspected.
"We have rated 89 per cent of premises - 10 per cent more than the regional average of 79 per cent.
"I’m pleased to report that less than half a percent of businesses inspected were awarded a zero rating, whilst some 45 per cent received the maximum rating of 5.
"In the last 12 months we have been more proactive in publishing stuff, getting the outlets to be proud of what they do, if they are doing good they should be shouting about it.
"It is not about trying to catch people out it is about raising standards."
Ravi Nir, from Surti News, said: “They [the council] come here and checked it. After that inspection they checked again and everything was fine.”
Troy Brown, co-partner at The Taste of Home, said: “It was to do with an additional part of the building, an extension we put on that was the cause of it.”
All businesses given a zero rating were contacted.
