Forecasters have predicted that temperatures across the region could reach as low as -7C (19F) during the night, and be just as cold tomorrow morning.

Snow is not anticipated during the cold snap but the freezing temperatures mean a yellow warning for ice is in place from 4pm this afternoon until 11am tomorrow morning.

The Met Office has warned the frost will be 'severe' and that there will be a 'continued ice risk'.

A spokesman said: "Ice is expected to form on some surfaces from late Monday afternoon and last overnight into Tuesday morning. There will probably be icy stretches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths with some injuries possible from slips and falls."

It is expected that gritters will be out on most of the region's roads tonight, with concerns the anticipated ice could cause mayhem for commuters in the morning.
