He only turned his back for a few minutes to get a wheelchair for his pregnant wife after parking up at a hospital car park.

But when he returned, Stuart Rutherford, found he had become a father for the second time, seeing his wife Debra with their son Tommy in her arms.

Mrs Rutherford gave birth standing behind the door of their vehicle at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton in the early hours of July 16.

The 37-year-old said: “When we turned up, Stuart was asking me if I could walk in, but I said no and that I needed a wheelchair, so he left.

“On his way back he shouted ‘someone is coming in a minute with a chair’.

“I turned around and had Tommy in my arms. He was completely shocked, and so was I.”

The couple are now back at home in Four Ashes with Tommy, who was able to come out of New Cross with his mother 12 hours after the birth.

The baby boy was two days early and weighed 7lb 10oz.

Mrs Rutherford, a marketing manager, said: “We left the home that night thinking it was quite early, I didn’t expect to be giving birth before I even reached the hospital.

“When Stewart left it suddenly just happened, I used the door for privacy and had a towel on the floor.”

The delivery was in contrast to Mrs Rutherford’s first birth, to Mia, who is now aged five.

The 37-year-old was in labour for 15 hours before giving birth.

Mrs Rutherford said: “I’m not sure how much of an impact it had, but I had four sessions in hypnobirth this time round.”

Hypnobirth can be taught in the home and aims to teach mothers-to-be ways to stay in control and calm during labour and birth.

Mrs Rutherford said: “We’re all over the moon.

“Tommy definitely has a story to tell as he gets older.”
