Search goes on for missing macaw thanks to support
They came out in their numbers – more than a dozen people of all ages, but with one purpose.
The group were on the search for a macaw which went missing in Walsall on July 7.
After owners Angie and Adrian Rothery put out a request for help, more than 10 people turned out for the search.
It took place on Tuesday night and started at the Asda car park in Bloxwich.
But despite a sighting of the bird, named Charlie, the group was unable to reunite him with his owners after it originally escaped through the back door of the couple’s home in Rushall.
Mr Rothery said: “It was a brilliant turnout and I thank everyone who came along.
“Angie did spot him, but I’m afraid he flew away and we’re still looking for him.”
The couple already have a £1,000 reward out for the bird, which they believe is living off wild berries and fruit from people’s back gardens.
The parrot, a blue and gold macaw, used to go on holiday with it’s owners, going everywhere from St Tropez to Cornwall.
The two-year-old, which can say ‘stop it’, ‘do you want this’ and ‘hello’, flew away from owner Angie Rothery by opening a mesh cover to the back door of her home in Shelfield, Walsall.
The 55-year-old said at the time: “I’m devastated, she goes everywhere with me. I fell in love with her and decided to take her home.”
Charlie was bought by Mrs Rothery from Hollybush Garden Centre, Wolverhampton, where she works with her daughter.
Macaws are long-tailed birds, which are native to Central America and eat a diet of seeds, nuts, fruits, palm fruits, leaves, flowers, and stems.
Mrs Rothery is urging anyone who spots the bird, to call her on 07771 890720.
