Titanic year as Betty marks her 105th birthday
She was born in the year that the Titanic sunk and survived two world wars.
And now Betty Sophia Jones has celebrated reaching her 105th birthday.
Betty marked the occasion with a party with fellow residents and careers at Nelson House care home, in Dudley, and was visited by her nephew David Homer.
Mr Homer, 66, who is Betty's only close living relative, described her as a woman who was dedicated to her family and took joy from helping anyone she could.
He said: "She got a huge amount of enjoyment out of helping people."
Aside from her family, she also had a keen interest in making dresses, albeit it always for free, for family and friends.
Mr Homer - who grew up in Netherton but now lives on the outskirts on Pershore, in Worcestershire, with his partner Linda, 64, whom he is due to marry - said: "She enjoyed amking dresses, for school occasions, anniversaries, or special outings.
"She was always happy when she had a sewing machine on the go making dresses.
"But she never had a penny for doing it."
Betty is also religious and enjoyed attending church, said Mr Homer.
"She loved churches," he said.
"She was a big church goer like all of our family."
She was one of six siblings, having four sisters - Nelly, Ivy, Cissy and Ane - and a brother Stan.
Betty was born at a pub in Netherton.
Her main job was working in a brick yard.
She marked her birthday on Monday where staff organised a celebration for Betty.
Leah Unit, who is a manager at the care home based on Nelson Road, said: "Betty is full of character.
"She knowns her own mind but really enjoys her birthday.
"For her birthday, we will organise a sing-along, there will be music and pass-the-parcel in a newspaper."
