Appeal for Beatties workers to reunite
An appeal has been launched ahead of a major reunion of employees from an iconic city centre department store.
The reunion, organised by the Friends of Beatties group, is to take place on Saturday, July 15 at Wombourne Civic Centre.
It is hoped that as many as 250 former Beatties employees will attend the event which is to raise money for Compton Hospice.
The flagship department store was founded in 1887 by James Beattie. It has been part of Wolverhampton's history and heritage ever since, for 140 years.
At its height in the 1980s and 1990s, the store employed more than 800 people.
Now, the group is appealing for people to get in touch if they would like to be involved, including former employees as well as city businesses who could offer sponsorship for the event.
Wendy Cullis, event project manager, said: "The event is being organised on a grand scale which will befit the importance the team places on all the loyal service given by local people and the prominence to which Beatties featured in Wolverhampton life.
"Compton Hospice was chosen as the charity to support as it was Beatties chosen charity for many years.
"Now, as well as appealing for former employees to get in touch, we are seeking further local companies to donate raffle prizes with items suitable for a charity auction on the night. This is the ideal opportunity for businesses to recognise the unique position Beatties is held in by local people as well as help a deserving city charity."
House of Fraser took over the ownership Beatties in 2005.
