Inmate charged after officer assault inside HMP Oakwood in Featherstone
An inmate has been charged after a prison officer was assaulted at HMP Oakwood.
Scott Michael Smith, aged 27, has been charged with wounding with intent and will appear at a magistrates court at a date yet to be set.
It follows an incident on February 24 when an officer was hospitalised with a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain. He is still recovering.
Staffordshire Police investigated the incident and the Crown Prosecution Service authorised the charge yesterday.
Private security firm G4S, which runs HMP Oakwood, said it would continue to support the investigation into the allegations.
Director for HMP Oakwood, John McLaughlin, said: “The safety of our team and the people they look after is paramount and we always work with the police to pursue sanctions in court against anyone who we believe threatens our prison community.
“We are grateful to Staffordshire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service for their action and will continue to support the investigation into these allegations.”
