Birmingham Crown and Magistrates' courts evacuated due to 'suspicious package' alert

Birmingham Crown and Magistrates' courts were evacuated due to an alert after reports of 'suspicious packages'.

Police closed both courts in the city centre and asked staff to leave the buildings after the alert at around 8.40am.

The crown court, in Newton Street, and the magistrates' court building, in Corporation Street, reopened at 10.45am

Officers from West Midlands Police were patrol outside both buildings.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "We were called to reports of suspicious packages being left at the Birmingham Magistrates and Crown courts at around 8.40am today.

They added searches are ongoing at the buildings.
