The site of a former bakery that was once Walsall's biggest employer will have 80 homes built on it.

The plans to build on the land where the former Harvestime Bakery on Hollyhedge Lane, Birchills, were approved at a council meeting on Thursday.

The proposals had already been rejected by council officials earlier this year due to concerns about access to and from the site.

Officials from the council had determined that the plans would see a vehicle pass through the area every four minutes but the rate was not considered 'severe'.

Councillor Mike Bird said: "Officers haven't got to live there. I don't think what we have heard demonstrates the new plans have overcome the original concerns."

Officials claim 91 parking spaces that would be created alleviates fears of there not being enough parking, leading to cars blocking emergency access.

They also said the installation of a one-way system would be looked into separately.
