The incident on Harborne Lane, Selly Oak, took place at around midday and flooded around 10 homes, sparking a clean-up operation.

Emergency services were sent to the scene, including West Midlands Fire Service who were called to assist at 11.49am. Police also attended and close the road.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "The cause was a ruptured water pipe. Ten homes were moderately flooded, and we also did door to door assurances at around 50 homes."

A team from Severn Trent were able to turn off the pipe that had burst, with the water company adding that there should be no impact on customer supplies.

A spokesman for Severn Trent said: "There is a possibility that some properties may have been flooded, and if so, we have teams ready to help with this if needed - please do get in touch with us if you need our help.

"We're really sorry for the inconvenience and hope it hasn't had too much of an impact on the local area.

"We don't think that there'll be any impact on customers' water supply as a result of the burst."

They added that any customers who do see discoloured water should run the first mains fed cold water tap in the home, normally located at the kitchen sink, at a gentle rate for up to 20 minutes.
