Wednesbury traffic chaos near Black Country New Road Amazon depot could soon be over

Red lines will be put in place outside an Amazon delivery depot in Wednesbury that has caused traffic chaos on surrounding roads due to delivery vans clogging up the street.

Residents have complained that delivery vans from the freight depot, on Black Country New Road, have caused congestion in other roads – particularly Patent Drive – by parking and causing blockages towards the island.

Concerned councillor Elaine Costigan confirmed that red lines would now be put in place on Patent Drive to stop delivery vans causing congestion on the commuter route.

It will mean that there is no stopping for any vehicles at any time.

It comes nearly a year since a new car park – that could take up to 80 vehicles – was opened at the site in a bid to ease the problems following complaints from frustrated residents.

Councillor Costigan said: "The car park seemed to help at first but now it seems the problem has just become on-going once again.

"The police are constantly ticketing down the road and they are working with Amazon to try to ease the problem.

"The lines will now mean that no delivery vehicles will be able to stop at any time. It has just caused chaos for everyone and there was an accident on the island not so long ago, too.

"With it coming up to Christmas we know that the problem could get worse due to more vehicles collecting and dropping off, so we want it sorted as soon as."

Last year officers from the Wednesbury North Neighbourhood Team held meetings with councillors, highways officers and Amazon management to create a solution after angry residents and drivers aired their concerns on Facebook.

Amazon said it was in the process of allocating additional parking spaces, after frustrated residents approached councillors and police about the problems.

Sergeant Sean Griffiths, from Wednesbury North Neighbourhood Team, said at the time: "Meetings have been held with local officers, councillors, highways and the manager from Amazon to try and create a solution.

"Since then it has been confirmed that the Amazon premises on Patent Drive are going to be creating a car park on their premises which will enable them to hold up to 80 vehicles.

"This will alleviate the congestion around Patent Drive. The neighbourhood team will continue to patrol and conduct operations."

Nobody was available for comment from Amazon last night.
