Two rushed to hospital after roundabout crash near Wolverhampton

Two people were rushed to hospital and a driver had to be cut free after a car smashed into a roundabout near Wolverhampton.

The car ended up in the middle of the island at the junction of Codsall Road and Blackburn Avenue after crashing at around 1.20am today.

Firefighters had to cut the roof off the severely-damaged car to free the driver who was travelling with one passenger.

One casualty was drifting in and out of consciousness after the crash, with a fractured pelvis, facial injuries and complaints of back and neck pain.

They were anaesthetised by the Merit Trauma Doctor, who attended along with two ambulances and a paramedic area support officer, before being rushed to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment.

The other patient, who was also anaesthetised, had rib and elbow injuries and was taken to Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital.

West Midlands Police and Staffordshire Police attended the scene, as did fire crews from Fallings Park and Codsall.

Firefighters were called by police after officers spotted steam coming from the vehicle. Ambulance crews left the scene just before 3am.

Tweeting about the crash, Fallings Park Fire said: "Our crews assisted by @StaffsFire from Codsall have dealt with a serious accident. take care on the roads."
